Birthstone by Month: The Complete Guide to All 12 Birthstones

A birthstone is the gemstone traditionally associated with the month of a person's birth — worn as jewelry, given as a meaningful gift, or chosen for its symbolism. Alif International supplies genuine, ethically-sourced natural birthstones for every month, cut and calibrated at our own Jaipur workshop, so you can buy with confidence in every stone's authenticity.

The birthstone tradition is believed to trace back to the breastplate of Aaron in the Book of Exodus, which described twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel — later linked to the twelve months of the year and zodiac signs. The modern list used by most jewelers today was standardized in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America), and several months carry a second, alternative stone alongside the traditional one.

Whether you're buying a birthstone for yourself, a loved one, or sourcing birthstone beads wholesale for a jewelry line, every stone below links to our live inventory — cut, calibrated and graded in-house, with worldwide shipping from Jaipur.

Birthstones FAQs

How do I find my birthstone by month?

Your birthstone is determined by the month you were born, following a tradition dating back centuries. January is Garnet, February is Amethyst, March is Aquamarine, April is Diamond, May is Emerald, June is Pearl (or Moonstone), July is Ruby, August is Peridot, September is Sapphire, October is Opal (or Tourmaline), November is Topaz (or Citrine), and December is Turquoise (or Tanzanite).

Why do some months have two birthstones?

Several months were given a second, alternative birthstone over time — often because the traditional stone became rare or expensive, or to offer a wider color choice. Both stones are considered valid birthstones for that month.

Are your birthstones natural or treated?

We disclose treatment status on every listing. Most of our birthstone inventory is sold as natural, untreated material graded in-house before it's listed — where a stone is commonly treated (heat, dye, etc.), we say so clearly on the product page.

Can I buy birthstones wholesale for jewelry making?

Yes — we manufacture and export faceted gemstones, beads and cabochons for every birthstone at wholesale volume, calibrated to consistent sizes for jewelry brands, designers and retailers worldwide.

Do you sell birthstone jewelry, or just loose stones?

We primarily supply loose faceted stones, beads and cabochons direct from our Jaipur workshop, along with sterling silver settings. This is ideal for jewelry makers, designers and wholesale buyers who want to set the stones themselves.
